'Trans Liminality: Gender confirmation surgery and the space between spaces' is an upcoming photobook by Winsall.
In June of 2024, Winsall set out alone for Bangkok, determined to receive gender confirmation surgery, also known as 'bottom' surgery, from one of Thailand's top surgeons, Dr Chettawut. Armed with her trusty Minolta pointed outwards, and her phone camera pointed inwards, Winsall sought to document the recovery journey.
Through her photographs, with supplemental content from her private instagram stories and writings from the author, 'Trans Liminality' is one woman's attempt to parse the complex emotionality of such life changing surgery whilst alone in a foreign country.
Below is a selection of photos from the book. All photos shot on a Minolta SRT100b, with Kodak professional Portra 400.
